ASUS PadFone Pictures

The folks at ASUS are clearly making some noticeable strides in the world of Android this year. First, they launched the sleek Eee Pad Transformer Android tablet at a relatively low price-point – it’s been flying off shelves. Now, they’re due to announce an innovative, new Android smartphone at Computex 2011 tomorrow. The latest leaked shots show that the ASUS PadFone will be an Android handset that can attach itself to a large tablet style shell. The device locks into a compartment in the back, through HDMI and USB ports, transforming it from an Android phone into an Android tablet with what appears to be a 10″ touchscreen. It seems like an improvement over the Motorola Atrix 4G’s laptop dock, which uses the phone as a central brain for a laptop shell.

The ASUS PadFone could likely be powered by Google’s upcoming update to Android, called Ice Cream Sandwich, which will bridge the gap between Android tablets and smartphones by combining Honeycomb and Gingerbread features into one delicious treat. The leaked images also show a 5 megapixel camera, front-facing camera, and two speakers. We’ll let you know more after this story develops further tomorrow.
