Sprint's HTC EVO 4G Will Be Upgraded to Gingerbread Soon

We’ve known since March that the HTC EVO 4G would receive an update to Gingerbread sometime in Q2 of this year. Now, Sprint is advertising the update on their EVO 4G shop listing. As you can see in the screenshot above, the listing says “Now with Android 2.3.” The only problem is that it hasn’t actually hit devices yet. So, either Sprint has made a major typo, mistaking Android 2.2 Froyo for 2.3 Gingerbread, or it’s a sign that they’re prepping the official release soon. Of course, there’s also the possibility that they’re already shipping Gingerbread with newly purchased EVO 4G handsets. We’re going to lean towards the prep theory, as we know it’s slated to be released by the end of next month. We’re just wondering whether it will arrive before or after the launch of the HTC EVO 3D. We’ll keep you posted!

UPDATE: and here’s official word from Sprint

It was mistakenly posted on Sprint.com that HTC EVO 4G with Android 2.3, Gingerbread, was available through our sale channels. We apologize for any confusion. HTC EVO 4G currently uses Android 2.2, Froyo, but we plan to upgrade to Android 2.3 as soon as we can.

So there you have it. It was mistakenly posted. That being said, mistakes usually happen close to release.
